Information for Groups and Educators

Updated: 13 minutes ago

Thank you for your interest in Letters Against Isolation. We’re excited you’re considering joining us in this meaningful activity. Every letter written by volunteers like you helps brighten the day of a senior, bringing joy and connection to those who need it most.

Here are some tips to maximize your impact.

How You Can Help

We’re seeking volunteers to handwrite and mail thoughtful, one-of-a-kind letters to seniors in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.

Sharing your personal stories and interests is a wonderful way to create a meaningful connection with your reader. While general wishes or affirmations can sometimes feel impersonal, focusing on your unique experiences makes your letter truly stand out. To ensure your message feels personal and inclusive, we kindly ask that you avoid sensitive topics such as religion, holidays, politics, health and mobility.

Each letter is a one-time act of kindness. While seniors may not have the ability or resources to write back, your words will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.

We operate year-round, and volunteering is flexible—you decide where, when and how many letters to write. Once your letters are ready to mail, log into our user portal to select a destination facility. The portal resets every other Sunday with new requests, and there’s no obligation until you commit your letters to a specific location.

We don’t share a direct link to our user portal on our website. Portal access is provided exclusively to registered volunteers.

No Commitment… Until You Commit!

There’s no commitment to write with us until you pledge letters in the portal. At that point, those letters are reserved specifically for you to mail during the current cycle. This means other volunteers cannot sign up to fulfill those requests. If your letters aren’t mailed, the designated seniors will not receive mail during that cycle.

We understand that circumstances can change unexpectedly, which is why we ask volunteers to write first and then pledge in the portal when you have an exact count of your letters and you’re ready to mail them promptly.

Every two weeks, our portal updates with 12,000 new letter requests. Please wait until after your event to pledge your letters to ensure that you are fulfilling a current need with accurate and up-to-date information.

Special Note Regarding the Holiday Season

We love welcoming volunteers inspired by the holiday spirit. To keep your letters meaningful throughout the year, we encourage sharing personal stories rather than holiday-specific wishes. These timeless messages resonate with seniors no matter when they read them. Be sure to review our holiday guidelines for letter content and mail your letters 3-4 weeks prior to the date.

Community Service Verification

Students seeking community service verification must take extra steps before beginning their service. If one person acts as your group coordinator, we’ll guide them through the process. If not, each student must register individually.

Our guidelines are in place to ensure your letters truly make a difference. To enroll:

  1. Contact Lindsay at lindsay@lettersagainstisolation.com with any questions.

  2. Complete our student registration form or our student group intake form. These forms are specifically used to gather information for community service purposes and are separate from the LAI group registration.

  3. Communicate with your assigned Community Service Liaison and share a photo of each letter for review before you mail it.

  4. Follow our guidelines to earn 15 minutes per approved letter.
